Preposition

Most common relations indicated by Prepositions:
  1. Place                                           : He stood behind the curtain.
  2. Time                                            : She arrived half an hour before me.
  3. Agency or Instrumentality             : My uncle sent me a parcel by post.
  4. Manner                                         : Your brother works with earnestness.
  5. Cause, Reason or Purpose            : I tell you for your own good.
  6. Possession                                   : The girl with red hair sings well.
  7. Measure, Rate, Value                     : His siter is shorter then him by three inches.
  8. Contrast, Concession                    : With all his faults I admire him.
  9. Inference, motive, source or origin : He did it for gratitude.
  • To answer the questions on Prepositions, one must be aware of the different effects made by adding different prepositions to different words.
  • A Preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show in what relation the person or thing denoted by it stands in regard to something else.  Preposition means 'that which is placed before'.
Prepositions

 I. Simple Prepositions (Single Preposition)

  1. at - used with small towns or villages
  2. by - denotes agent
  3. for - reason
  4. from - persons and places
  5. in and at - are used of things at rest
  6. in - denotes a period of time, the end of that period
  7. in - used with names of countries and large cities
  8. of - persons and places
  9. off - away, separation
  10. on - used of things at rest
  11. out - place and time
  12. through - place
  13. till - used of time
  14. to - used of place and of things in motion
  15. with - denotes instrument

II. Compound Preposition (Double Preposition)

     Compound Prepositions or Double Prepositions (formed by prefixing a preposition - a, be, in, out,      under, with - to a noun or an adjective or an adverb)

  3. across      = through

  5. amid         = in the middle
  6. among      = one with
